Precious Time

A blog post from the depths of treatment and introspection.

Minestrone Soup

A warm and nourishing soup to share with someone going through hard times.

I read a lot while I was going through treatment.

I read all sorts of genres but a handful of novels made some of the worst times bearable and even fun. I also discovered poetry in a new way. It became a lifeline, truly. And this poem was my rock. I read it every morning for weeks and weeks.

You Reading This, Be Ready

Starting here, what do you want to remember?
How sunlight creeps along a shining floor?
What scent of old wood hovers, what softened sound from outside fills the air?
Will you ever bring a better gift for the world than the breathing respect that you carry wherever you go right now? Are you waiting for time to show you some better thoughts?

When you turn around, starting here, lift this new glimpse that you found; carry into evening all that you want from this day. This interval you spent reading or hearing this, keep it for life —

What can anyone give you greater than now,
starting here, right in this room, when you turn around?

Resources

Here are some of the resources, practices and practitioners that supported me during my year of breast cancer treatment.

Cook For Your Life

The best cookbook for people touched by cancer and a wonderful organization and resource.

Sage Cancer Care

I worked with Dr. Dave Allerdice throughout my treatment and followed a tailored fasting protocol during my chemotherapy. It's a fascinating approach with immediate benefits for me and some promising studies on its efficacy.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs

Both can relieve symptoms and side effects and support you deeply during treatment and during recovery. I worked with Healing Way Acupuncture in Portland, Oregon.

Alexander Technique

Based on the principles of F.M. Alexander, this is a practical, hands-on study of the principles of coordination, movement, habit, and awareness, which teaches you how to release pain and tension, rediscover excellence, ease, strength, flexibility, grace, and joy, and realize conscious choice in every activity of life. I worked with Rebecca Harrison in Portland, Oregon.

Yoga

Yoga can be a deeply supportive and calming practice during treatment or stress of any kind. I worked with Unfold Yoga in Portland, Oregon.
